Her award was, in part, granted for her teamwork and willingness to serve the Libraries in a variety of extra assignments. Thanks to Helen for this nomination.
Joyce from an academic library in Auburn, AL, is a Star! If you could only see the beautiful display cabinets and cases Joyce prepares for the our Special Collections and Archives Department, you would understand why. Not only does she select intriguing topics and objects, she has a true talent for telling a story. Over the years she has created numerous themes that support speeches and events scheduled for that area. She also builds incredible good will for the Libraries by her gracious handling of questions, particularly genealogical inquiries, from a diverse group of patrons. She frequently receives letters of thanks from patrons, particularly Faculty. As one of her duties she arranges receptions for the various speakers programs held in the department. These event receptions are always elegant. Joyce won the university library’s Employee of the Year for 2004. She absolutely deserved it for her exceptional talents and devotion to her duties. What makes her even more special is she has done just and much and more after winning the award. Thanks to Helen for this nomination.

Lisa from an academic library in Phoenix, AZ, is a Star! I have been a huge fan of Lisa for 15 years. I consider her to be my personal research librarian. Of course, she's many of my colleagues' librarian too, but lisa makes us each feel as if she's ours, she's that good at working with each of us on our research and classroom needs. Talk about a cybrarian--Lisa has been operating in this sphere since day one, because of the special nature of our university: we has a giant research library at one campus, but at another campus we have an outpost of that library. Librarians facilitate access to the enormous collection of books, documents, and electronic resources, all through hyper-cyber connections. Lisa is the Star at this, and knows exactly what materials I need. I live in fear of the day--which is coming soon--when she'll finish her Ph.D in educational leadership and move on to be the professor herself. Whoever will then be my librarian doesn't stand a chance of filling Lisa's shoes. Thanks to Kristin for this nomination.
Deg from an academic library in Glendale, AZ, is a Star. Over the years, Deg has developed a first rate collection of media materials. This collection spans a wide range of creative activities and is especially focused in 20th and now 21st c. Work. Dennis from an academic library in Glendale, AZ, is a Star. Not only incredibly knowledgeable in conducting and instructing students in traditional and online reasearch, he also goes far out of his way to assist faculty and students on numerous levels. I've taught at universities where librarians have avoided students, yet dennis makes himslef available in the library, by phone and through email to students--and he is genuinely interested in helping them! My research, and that of my students, is rewarding and fruitful primarily due to the continued and thoughtful assistance and guidance provided by my favorite librarian! Thanks to Sherry for this nomination.
The voluteers at a public library in Sun City, AZ, are Stars! We receive no funding other than contributions and membership fees. If it weren't for the wonderful, faithful volunteers, we would have no program in our two-branch library. Thanks to Kay for this nomination.

As journals moved from print to electronic, she moved to our department and participated in providing a wide variety of reference services while still managing the periodicals and assisting with the monograph collection and supervising staff. In addition, she takes on other tasks and her work is always outstanding. When it came time to merge the circulation and reference functions into a single information service point, chris was an indespensible part of the process. ARKANSAS
John
public library in Rogers, AR
STAR BECAUSE He goes above and beyond the call of duty to make sure that our computers are all working and that the public using our community room can use their presentations -- this included converting a users program which was showing up as unreadable into a format that the presenter could use. Bravo, John. From Fran.
The University of Arkansas Libraries are Stars! In the spring semester of 2008, the libraries participated in the razorfit wellness program, a partnership between the human performance laboratory, the pat walker health center, the school of human and environmental sciences, and mullins library. The razorfit pilot program was designed to provide resources, education, and outreach programs to support faculty and staff in enhancing and improving their health and well-being. The goals for each individual participant are to increase energy levels, to eat for better health and to fuel an active lifestyle, to discontinue any use of tobacco products, to catch life-threatening illnesses in early stages, and to reduce and manage stress. Participants from the libraries underwent a battery of tests and then were paired with student trainers from the human performance laboratory for exercise and training three hours a week. The school of human and environmental sciences held healthy cooking demonstration classes bi-weekly, and the pat walker health center provided smoking cessation counseling and group sessions. In addition, walking groups met at the libraries during the lunch break and walked one of several on-campus trails mapped by the program, and yoga classes were held in the mullins library classroom twice a week. At the end of the semester, participants will undergo another battery of tests and will compare their pre-program results in areas such as resting heart rate, blood pressure, and cholesterol levels with their post-program results. Though the program has not yet ended, the results are already evident. Participants report improved energy levels, and many are already committed to continuing their exercise routines beyond the program’s conclusion and banding together with exercise buddies. Perhaps reference librarian Jan has the best success story in the program. After being diagnosed with a rare disorder affecting her red blood cell count, battling fatigue was a major obstacle in jan’s daily routine. Following the exercise program designed for her by her student trainer Hayley, Jan has regained a sense of control over her chronic and debilitating fatigue. Jan said, “I’m not making any new red blood cells, but the exercise has increased my blood flow so that more oxygen is running through my body.” Jan feels better and it shows. Thanks to Molly for this nomination.

CALIFORNIA
Connie
public library in Alpine, CA
STAR BECAUSE Connie, is a star because as a branch manager, in a coummunity of over 15,000 people with ONLY ONE library, her skills and ability demand the brains of a computer, the patience of a saint, the compassion of a mother, and an arbitrator of the community. She has a large fan club of patrons who come into the library during her shifts. For some, their weekly library visit and chat with linda is the highlight of their week. They talk about books and plants and knitting and whatever else is happening in their lives. She is the heart of our morning shift and greets all who enter our library with a friendly smile. Thanks to Lidia for this nomination.
Robert from a public library in Burbank, CA, is a Star because is our library’s morning page. He's in charge of putting the materials left from the night before on the shelf and make sure the library is in good order before we open in the morning. He's a retired United State Postal Service employee. I have never met a more pleasant person than Bob. He always greets people with a smile and a warm greeting. I have never missed his morning hello. He always has something nice to say and you can always have a pleasant conversation with him. Everyone likes him since he exudes the positive energy that humans need in order to function well. Anytime I have asked bob to help me with a project, he has helped me willingly and has suggested how to even better the project by giving his ideas. I'm so provileged to have a co-worker like Bob. I believe he's a Star because of his personality, his warmth, and his sense of duty. I wish there were more people like him in this world. Thanks to Isabelle for this nomination.

The UCSD Libraries in La Jolla, CA, are Stars because they have made a strong commitment to promoting health and wellness. A hatha yoga instructor comes to the libraries twice a week and conducts yoga classes. These yoga classes are available for free to all interested library employees, including student library employees. The yoga sessions have been going on for almost a year now, and they are well attended. We also have a walking club at ucsd libraries. There are fast-paced, medium-paced, and slow-paced groups that meet at pre-determined times throughout the work week. Employees share tips on walking routes, take pictures from the walks to go in our monthly internal newsletters, and have the added benefit of getting to know colleagues in other departments along the way. Most recently, the ucsd libraries has Started a pain-free program. This program, still in its pilot phase, brings a holistic health practitioner on-site to work individually with interested employees. The practitioner meets with participating employees for 30 minutes once a week for a total of 5 weeks. During that time, the practitioner helps employees with their individual musculoskeletal issues, and provides exercises to relieve pain associated with those specific health issues. All work between the practitioner and the employees is strictly confidential. Though still in its infancy, this program is proving to be very successful! We bring in a cpr instructor periodically to provide instruction and certification to interested employees. This service is free to employees, and last year, resulted in certifying 20 employees. The ucsd libraries also does a number of other miscellaneous activities to promote health and wellness. We have contracted with campus police to provide rape aggression defense training at no cost to interested employees. This national program is designed to provide women with the concepts and methods needed for self-defense, and is taught by certified rad instructors over the course of three evenings. Around the winter holidays, the libraries held a healthy holiday potluck. Recipes from those who participated were compiled and a libraries holiday cookbook was created. Periodically, we bring in speakers to provide specific talks on various topics ranging from reducing anxiety and adding laughter to life to carpal tunnel syndrome and ergonomics. In addition, we offer a full complement of safety and security training sessions to ucsd libraries staff in an effort to increase employees’ safety and physical well-being. We’ve offered workshops that focus on increasing personal safety both at work and at home, in-depth earthquake preparedness workshops, general emergency preparedness workshops, and even training about how to avoid identity theft. These programs are open to all library employees, including student workers, and at many of the workshops, the libraries distributes water tubes, masks, first aid supplies, and other materials for employees to use in their work or home emergency kits. As the examples above illustrate, the UCSD Libraries place a high priority on programs that support our employees’ physical and mental wellness. Thanks to Anonymous for this nomination.
Michael from a public library in San Jose, CA, is a
Star because he has to deal indirectly with generally clueless library administrations not only in one organization but in two since he works in a merged public/university library. Since the merger both organizations appear to be treading water and think that holding celebrations and constructing new buildings equal good library service. Both administrations always seem to find money for public celebrations (1 millionth visitor, 50 million items circulated, etc.) But not for staff appreciation. The administrations are not on the same page and want you to get things done yesterday while they vacillate and procrastinate in their "decision-making." there is no direction, yet michael has to work in this environment and get things done. He gets no praise for the work he does, which goes above and beyond the normal duties of his classification, but that's true of many other staff where he works. Thanks to Anonymous for this nomination.
Patricia from a public library in Santa Margarita, CA, is a
Star because Jane is a wonder. She is always there helping out and backing up our primary librarian. She always has a smile and a hello for everyone who comes to our library. She is a friend to everyone regardless of age or gender. She is patient, kind, caring and smart. We are only open 3 days a week so those days are particularly busy, but debra always finds the time to help others and is always smiling. From patricia.
Jane from a public library in Santa Margarita, CA, is a
Star because Jane brings a warm smile, and genuine caring to our library family! She works so hard to keep our library in order, but always has time to share a smile and say hello, and to ask if she can help us. Jane, thank you for caring about us, and taking care of us! She works with the San Francisco Department of Public Health as a safety and ergonomic trainer for City employees. She provides the library with group pedestrian safety trainings and group ergonomics trainings. She trains library staff members to do ergonomic evaluations, and does individual ergonomics evaluations as needed for difficult cases to help each of us set up our work spaces with appropriate devices and configurations to minimize physical stress and pain. Thanks to Nancy for this nomination.
Stephanie from a public library in Commerce, CA, is a Star because she put together the Request for Proposal (RFP) for the Library's automation system. She setup/configured the whole automation system by herself with the help of the vendor. She set up training for all staff. We went "Go Live" on February 14, 2008, and she has done a tremendous job in getting everything ready. She is still making sure that the system is working correct and that staff are comfortable using it. It is a very stressful time for staff and she has helped us through it with a cheerful attitude not showing how stressed out or tired she is. She has worked everyday, even staying late to make sure everything will be smooth for staff and the public. Stephanie has done an outstanding job in setting up our main library and 3 branch libraries. Our library thanks Stephanie for all her hard work. She is a Star. Thanks to Carol Ann for this nomination.
Marta from a public library in Fremont, CA, is a Star because Marta is a clerk and she is a tremendous advocate for the library and for library programs. We work in the extension services and are connected to the main library. One time a staff received a phone call from our main library asking for a shelf check. The staff found the book and told the librarian that she would put the book "through the transit" (for a patron that is at the reference desk a five minute walk away). Marta talked to the staff about providing service to our library patrons and how important that is. She talked to the staff about how it was a five minute walk for her to bring over the book and it most likely is a drive for the patron to come back another day. The staff member heard what Marta said and walked the book over. Marta is consistent in providing the best service and in helping others do that as well. Marta goes out of her way to help people. I often call her to find books for me that a patron has asked for. It is out of her job description to do so, yet she is willing to look for the book and to send it over to me (20 miles away)!. Thanks to Amy for this nomination.
Dianna from a special library in Sacramento, CA, is a Star because Dianna has the sparkle, drive, and initiative to go beyond the daily routine - she's got company alumni coming in to speak to the young 'uns about space propulsion in the good old days, she's captured irretrievable data from the early days of rocketry and brought us all up to date on video or in electronic retrievable formats, saving this heritage for all! Ain't nobody else who does what she do! ..and you can name more than a few Stars after this pro. Thanks to Michael for this nomination.

These outstanding individuals have risen to the challenge and are helping to make this library system a huge success. We have witnessed unprecedented customer service, innovative programming ideas, and an incredible work ethic. Dianna developed the document management system at Aerojet and has single-handedly coded and placed thousands of documents into the company's library database. During the time she lead the district she orchestrated numerous community meetings as part of a strategic planning process that was taking place at the time and organized interviews for six candidates for director. She managed the district's finances and developed the 2008 budget. Wilma kept the board informed and managed a myriad of day-to-day problems at the six branch libraries. She became the go-to person for any number of problems and proved her worth many times over.
Wilma has just returned from attending her first pla and is as enthusiastic as ever about libraries. She has recently revamped the employee handbook and is looking for other ways to contribute. She is a fast and astute learner and has come to feel the passion of library service. In short, she is a library hero! From amelia.

She is professional, and extremely timely returning calls and answering emails. Libraries know that she is the "go to" person to contact at the library support center for results. Debbie was also nominated for her work with the initial planning of the kronos time keeping for the library system. She was nominated for working with payroll, library staff, and management to reduce the stress of using this new system. She received praise from managers and staff for her ability to respond to changes and questions in a timely manner. Tyler from a public library in Gainsville, FL, is a Star because she manages and motivates our more than forty volunteers from 14 to too old to tell. She posts a smiling photo of each person so all staff may know them by name and express their appreciation for the work they do. She plans annual recognition banquets for teens and for adults. Carmen from a public library in Lauderhill, FL, is a Star because she is the most cooperative staff member that I believe we have, she is thoughtful, kind, and generous to both customers and staff. Carmen is thorough in her library duties, she is the most efficent packer and unpacker of library materials, if she can be of assistance to customers and staff she doesn't seem to hesistate, and if she can not help she takes the time to listen and sometimes that is just as beneficial as if she stepped in and physically helped one accomplish their task. Carmen is one of the best paraprofessionals that I know and she often doesn't get the credit for her ideas, job knowledge, and service that she provides daily. She is a quiet, unassuming, and giving library aide who to me is quite a Star. Thanks to Rose-Marie for this nomination.
