GEORGIA

Diane from a public library in Atlanta, GA, is a Star! She has been with the library system for over fifteen years, providing excellent customer services to library users the entire time. Diane, as head of the circulation desk for vinings, deals with hundreds of people each week, often under stressful conditions, with consistent grace. The circulation desk is the busiest point in any library, requiring a pleasant manner and tactful handing of library users’ needs and demands. There are few positions in the library so consistently in the public eye. Not only does Diane provide excellent customer service herself, but she also sees that the circulation staff she supervises does the same.  Her outstanding performance earned her two distinguished performance awards, for 200 and 2001 and cobb county’s customer service award in 2004. Diane has been able to attract and keep the loyalty of residents through her reading of popular fiction and through getting to know the patrons. She is able to make reader advisory recommendations which are not readily available any place else. Many of these readers trust Diane’s judgment. They have given her their library card number to use to reserve new books of interest to them as the books become available. In her position as circulation manager, Diane is frequently called upon to make judgments upon returned materials. Judgments must be made on damaged materials as to whether the item is worn out or damaged; the later involves replacement costs. Diane handles these situations with authority and an air of experience so that few of these situations need to be passed on to the manager or to customer service. Thanks to Susan for this nomination.

Marc from a public library in Chamblee, GA, is a Star because he goes out of his way to train new employees thoroughly and properly. It is a pleasure to work with him and he always answers questions no matter how insignificant they might seem. Marc is always available to help patrons as well as coworkers. Thanks to Kelly for this nomination.

Isabel from a public library in Chamblee, GA, is a Star because she is always willing to help patrons and co-workers with whatever they need. Isabel also goes out of her way to help co-workers that are enrolled in a master's program in library science. Thanks to Kelly for this nomination.

Jan from a public library in Macon, GA, is a Star because she stepped into a supervisory position in August this year and was immediately faced with two resignations, one vacancy, and one staff member on extended sick leave. Even though the two resignations were positive (both had completed their library degrees and had gone on to professional positions), this left jan with no trained staff and a busy fall semester looming. Jan made it all happen; no complaints were received, the desk was always staff, and new staff were eventually hired and trained by jan. In addition to all this, jan also directed two minor and three major shifts of the book collection. She was always smiling, always pleasant, and always ready to make sure all of our patrons were well-served. Thanks to Theresa for this nomination.

Judy pitches in at work, whether it's staffing the Help Desk, checking in holds, filing holds, or shelving books; she's always right there. Judy is an invaluable asset to our branch. Thanks to Meredith for this nomination.

Emama
academic library in Chicago, IL
STAR BECAUSE Emama has taken a lead role in withdrawing long-missing items from the Library's online catalog.  Although she focuses primarily on items from the main library, she also is responsible for distributing work to the other, smaller libraries for follow-up.  This long-term project is an important one aimed at making the catalog up-to-date and as accurate as possible -- thus reducing user frustration.  In addition, Emama has recently been trained to assist at the main circulation desk not only in checking out materials but also in dealing with billing questions, problems, and reconciliation.  From Robert.

Erika, Ana and Nancy from an academic library in Chicago, IL, are Stars. Erika, our lending specialist, responds to and prepares lending requests to libraries around the world. Thanks to Ana, materials are processed quickly and users are very pleased with our efficient turnaround time. In our copyroom, Nancy has valiantly weathered malfunctioning scanners, software glitches, system conversions and heaps of copy requests. Thanks to her, and despite many obstacles, articles continue to reach their target institutions quickly and with careful attention to scan quality. Due to their hard work and flexibility, we made a wonderfully smooth transition to a new ill system this past year. It’s my pleasure to work with such a fine, dedicated staff. Thanks to John for this nomination.

Christie from a public library in Evanston, IL, is a Star because she is the young adult librarian and oversees the library's all-new teen loft. Aside from excelling at selecting teen materials, engaging teens in activities and programs (gaming, crafts, movies, book discussions, reader's theater, plus two separate teen advisory boards that are comprised of teens from age 13 through 18), creating print and online reading suggestions, participating in community-wide projects (she launched a city-wide, year-long teen read program and has partnered with the recreation department's youth engagement initiative), and book talking at the schools, christie is a thoughtful and tireless advocate for teens. Her very presence set the tone for the new loft and has made it the coolest place in town for teens to be. Thanks to Laura for this nomination.

John from a public library in Park Ridge, IL, is a Star because, as circulation manager, John goes above and beyond the call of duty. He makes sure that each recipient of an interlibrary loan receives a message, recorded in his own voice, to come and pick up an item that has been received. He often holds items for a longer period if the patron can't make it into the library. He returns items to other libraries that have mistakenly made their way to the library, sometimes having to send items out of state! Thanks to Sarah for this nomination.

Joan sets out the books for sale in the library's book sale cart. But Joan is now extra special. She works in the University Archives for Northern Illinois University. Local and university history can be fun, until something tragic happens. Now, Joan is preserving and archiving materials to save the history of the tragic February shooting rampage in a classroom at Northern Illinois University. The shooting left five innocent students dead and over a dozen wounded before the shooter took his own life. Collecting materials and printing information off Web pages before they get changed and the information is lost to cyberspace about the shooting is a constant, day-long reminder that the lives of college students once filled with promise are now gone. Additionally, due to a retirement, Joan's office is short a full-time employee. This is a very stressful job, but one of great responsibility. Karen from a public library in Lexington, KY, is a Star because she works the circ desk, but behind the scenes like all full time librarian assistants, she has her own back work. In spite of this, even when not scheduled at the desk, if she notices we are overworked she always pitches in to help alleviate the load with no one having to ask her. She is usually the first to notice every patron coming up to the desk, and drops everything to say, "may I help you?" she is a blessing to both the staff and the patrons. She takes a personal interest in every staff member and is a great listener and encourager. She takes the time to know and care about each of our personal struggles, goals and triumphs. When she is on vacation we all notice her absence. She shows a tremendous empathy towards the patrons and her fellow coworkers. STAR BECAUSE Evelyn, our reference librarian, is great at answering reference questions—she knows the right questions to ask patrons to help them determine what exactly it is they want to know. Evelyn is quiet, patient, compassionate and always professional. But don’t be fooled, behind that demure librarian exterior, is a witty mind that keeps us all entertained, especially on those rough days that everyone has on the job.  She’s definitely one of our brightest and most “twinkling” of Parish Library stars.  From Deborah.

Theresa
public library in Natchitoches, LA
STAR BECAUSE Theresa is the first person most people see when they visit the Parish Library and whether she handling phone calls, processing the multitude of Interlibrary Loan requests from patrons that she gets daily, or checking books in or out for someone (and sometimes all these things at the same time!) she usually manages to greet all who pass her desk on the way in or wish them a good day on their way out.  Theresa speaks her mind without pulling any punches, which can be refreshing, sometimes alarming, and usually entertaining. Theresa’s star certainly brightens our Library.  From Deborah.

Rosalind
public library in Natchitoches, LA
STAR BECAUSE No matter from where in the Natchitoches Parish Library “galaxy” Rosalind is shining, we can always depend on her to very capably carry out any task she is assigned or volunteers to do. She is smart and versatile, imaginative, yet practical, and her star shines bright from wherever in our galaxy she may be found.  From Deborah.

Barbara from a public library in Shreveport, LA, is a Star because throughout the 29 years I have worked in libraries, I have not met a better librarian than Barbara. She was the recipient of the 1999 Blanche and Moultrie Adger Public Service Award for service to the elderly and was honored with a ranking of "Excellent" in every category by the 1994 Shreveport Bossier Hospitality Secret Shopper program, which was sponsored by the Shreveport Chamber of Commerce. Moore has also received more than 100 compliments from library patrons, including at least 54 times when the patron actually took the time to send a written compliment about her. She has also received countless compliments from library staff members, administrators, and library board members. In addition, she created an e-mail reference service in June 2001 and began in 2005 a series of Brown Bag Lunch Topics to increase patronage of the downtown library. After Hurricane Katrina hit Louisiana, she organized the donation of books to the three local evacuee shelters. She is a model for public service and a mentor to scores of employees. These are just a few of the praises that have been sung for Moore as a mentor: "You do more for employee morale than anyone I have ever worked with." "You are one of the kindest, most considerate, thoughtful, and just plain delightful people I have ever known. You make a person feel wanted, needed and appreciated, all the things that help give one self-esteem and self-worth . . ." "[You are] professional, intelligent, approachable . . . not afraid to be a team player as well as the coach." "[She is] very professional, knowledgeable, patient with new employees, enjoyable to work with . . . a wonderful asset." Her public service for a public library is unsurpassed. She gives each patron the very best possible assistance. Without reservation, I most highly recommend Barbara for the National Library Workers Day "Stars" program. Thanks to Carlos for this nomination.

Cheryl from a library in Broussard, LA, is a Star because she has a positive outlook and is caring and giving.  Thanks to Dana for this nomination.

Kathy from a public library in Lafayette, LA, is a Star because she is the head children's librarian and our local library's main branch.  She is incredibly knowledgeable, helpful and more than willing to put herself out to help individuals and/or groups.  She has fostered a close relationship with local homeschoolers, has encouraged strong progams for children and has helped to effect a popular and terrific teen program.  She is one of the closest examples that I know of what a librarian should be--and this is in a library staff where every single children's librarian go above and beyond the call of duty and maintain the best children's department I have ever dealt with. Thanks to Marie for this nomination.

Gina from a public library in Covington, LA, is a Star because she is a very dependable person who goes about her job most efficiently and quietly.  Her happy stories make the days of all her co-workers. Thanks to Grace for this nomination.
