Steve
academic library in Dayton, OH
STAR BECAUSE He's extremely dedicated to the library and the clients we serve and this dedication is evident in his daily work. During finals week Steve opened the library an hour early, on his own accord, because he was worried students would be waiting outside to get in on a Sunday. Steve is also a wonderful supervisor to many student assistants and he works the evening shift, never a popular shift! From sue
Betsy from an academic library in Athens, OH, is a Star because she is an amazing and dedicated worker. Her first concern is always service and the patron. "how can we make that work?" is her mantra. She's not afraid to learn new things--pushing the boundries of her own comfort zone. After years in government documents she moved to fine arts when needed there and has become a fabulous fine arts reference figure. Thanks to Janet for this nomination.

They are committed to meeting our customers’ needs by providing the highest quality of customer service possible with respect and courtesy. all staff
public library in portland, or
Star because Woodstock library staff are all stars because they handle increasing demand and work load with aplomb. They even come up with new ways to have fun. Sandy keeps up with all of our birthdays, joan buys the cards, cathy herds the summer reading volunteers (all 40 plus of them), andrew is always cheerful, karen can dance with her book truck, jo creates safety quizzes, sarah makes sure what we do makes sense, allison keeps the graphic novels in line, jackie is always looking for ways to help, david is beginning to figure us out, amber does her storytimes in mandarin and english, johanna can invite a new user to get a card in spanish, larry will soon have everything sorted and rosalind can translate, do reference and cook in chinese. The staff room has never smelled so delicious! As a library supervisor i could not ask for a better staff! From carol.
PENNSYLVANIA
Dawn from a school library in Clearfield, PA, is a Star because she brings to the library a lifetime love of reading and learning. Her ability to deal with quickly changing subjects and students makes her invaluable to the work of the library. She's willing to take on any task, from learning a new computer system to indepth catalog work of the most mundane level. Her smile and sense of humor make her a hit with the students and her work ethic is inspiring to those around her. She deserves a supernova! Thanks to Alice for this nomination.
Cynthia, director of a public library in Pittsburgh, PA, is a Star not only because she has won many accolades from both national and local organizations for her commitment to quality library service, but, for the employees at our library, her quiet support of fair salaries and benefits and her ability for hiring quality, competent staff has made our library one of the better libraries in the area. I feel that our profession often has those who support libraries and patron service, but in addition to that, our director is committed to creating a quality staff to carry out that commitment. She has a knack for hiring the very best people who are creative, professional and altruistic! I work with a group of people who are qualified and well educated, and we know that we are compensated as best as is possible in our region. In a profession where budgets are tight and many staff are fearful of losing their positions, and in a profession where my colleagues at other libraries complain about the respect they receive for their abilities, I know that my director will support the staff who makes quality library service possible and that she will continue to make sure that librarians are treated with the same respect as other professionals. Thanks to Laurena for this nomination.
Jessica from a public library in Carmichaels, PA, teaches computer use classes to the public, Starting with a 'how to use the mouse' class in which she wears a giant yellow cardboard mouse costume to help explain how to right and left click. She is always willing to help patrons figure out how to use the internet sites they need or to use the software necessary to create a resume, write a letter, or file a complaint, for example. When she isn't helping the patrons, Jessica is busy taking classes at the university of pittsburgh toward her master of library and information science degree, keeping the library computer network up and running efficiently, cataloging books, weeding the collection, and thinking of creative ways, such as computer gaming nights, to encourage the community's teens to use the library. Thanks to Linda for this nomination.
Jeanette from a public library in Pittsburgh, PA, is a Star because she has never found a customer’s question that she did not go the limit to find an answer. Her many years of service have been an example to other staff. She is a fountain of wisdom and information. She is a great asset to our library. Thanks to Joyce for this nomination.
Margaret from a public library in Farrell, PA, is a Star because of her shining personality and sparkling attitude! She runs her library in an economically depressed area. She cares for the children of her library and makes their school year productive and their summers fun. She provides all the encouragement and candy that make children grow to be kind, responcible adults. Margraret's gift of her time and talents and patience are truely extrodinary--like no other. If you're really looking for a Star-look no further because "miss margaret" as the children call her is"'perfectly heavenly". Thanks to Jeanni for this nomination.
frances
public library in philadelphia, pa
Star because Frani joined the library staff when she was 18. I won't divulge her age but, according to city regulations, she can retire in three years. For a long time, frani was secretary to the chief of extensions, the branch system of the free library; she holds more instutional memory about people and events in the free library's history during her tenure than anyone else, working or retired.
When she got married and began a family, frani asked for a transfer closer to home. Currently, she is the manager of the northeast area office and secretary to the administrator of that region (the position from which i retired four years, ago.) She is a walking encyclopedia of personnel regulations. Staff feel comfortable talking to her for information and she is excellent at triage. She is supremely organized and can be counted on to complete an assignment correctly and in a timely fashion without supervision (unless it comes just after irish weekend, in which case all bets are off.) Before i assumed the position of administrator, i wondered why the person in that position would speak of consulting with her; after all, she wasn't even a librarian! When i retired, i wondered how i would have been able to accomplish half the things i did without her.
Frani doesn't like to be recognized. That's just too bad. She's the kind of support staff every library system deserves to have. From linda.
Eva from a school library in Fairfield, PA, is a Star because Eva is extremely self motivated, quick and efficient. She makes a real effort to provide service to the students, teachers, and administrators who are our patrons, and gets along well with all of them. Our students are especially fond of her. Eva reads YA books to keep current, and makes suggestions for purchase. Her ability with computers is a real plus for the library. Using her own time to attend workshops on the ACCESS PA interlibrary loan process, Eva has become the district's interlibrary loan officer, and also works on cataloging and materials processing. She is a valuable part of our library team. Thanks to Debra for this nomination.
Nadine from a school library in Chambersburg, PA, is a Star because Nadine cheerfully and patiently interacts with students and staff to help them find resources they need or want. She does all the interlibrary loan work for our library. She acts as financial secretary for our library. She is pleasant to everyone around her. She constantly strives to learn new and better ways to manage our library operations. She also takes college courses at night, aiming to finish her bachelors' degree while also fulfilling her role as mother of an adolescent and a teenager. She is always caring and concerned about everyone else she encounters. She's a pleasure to have as a co-worker. Thanks to Joanne for this nomination.
RHODE ISLAND
SOUTH CAROLINA
Summer from a public library in Charleston, SC, is a library “Star” as a result of her extraordinary accomplishments in her project teens in crisis: outreaching to incarcerated youth. Summer had wonderful success reaching not only one of the more difficult demographics, juveniles 11-17, but kids who have committed crimes and are incarcerated. She realized a deficiency in their environment and created a more comfortable, educational, and functional one. Initially met with resistance by some south carolina department of juvenile justice staff, summer persevered and was given a trial period for staff to determine the viability of placing books in the facility and encouraging the kids to read – it was a wonderful success. Summer provided not only book-talks to the incarcerated kids, but something more: the opportunity to relate the literature to their own, often troubled, lives. She showed them respect and compassion, and they reciprocated. The numbers speak for themselves: nearly 9 out of 10 inmates (over 500 individuals) participated in the voluntary program. In showing an interest in not only promoting literacy, but also enabling the inmates to better their lives, summer accomplished more than could have ever been anticipated. Her project was (and remains) a shining example of how to reach troubled youth through the literary arts and dialogue. Thanks to Cary for this nomination.
Kim from a public library in Charleston, SC, is a Star! One person makes a difference...when Kim took over a rural branch library, she increased children's summer reading participation by 483%! We're talking supernova! Thanks to Pam for this nomination.
Gail
public library in Greenville, SC
STAR BECAUSE Gail is constantly thinking of ways to improve her children's programs and activities. She is such a hard worker and loved by all who know her. Gail started the "Bouncing Babies" program that is well-liked by those who participate with their babies and toddlers. It's hard for Gail to even go to the grocery store without being greeted joyfully by a young child. Gail is a star because of all the wonderful things she does for her community and the library without asking for a single thing in return. From Kytt.
phyllis
academic library in rock hill, sc
Star because Phyllis and i have worked together for six years; she is professional in all that she does. Not only has she worked hard to attain her ba in bus. Admin., she is also considering continuing on for a mls.
Cindy from a public library in Gaffney, SC, is a Star because Cindy, our systems administrator, is tireless and shows up to work despite all odds. She is also the type of librarian who can do anything in a library, from computer work to circulation, and such people are rare. She keeps our servers up and running single-handedly, fixes broken PCs, replaces nonfunctional parts, works with our catalog, talks staff through comptuer problems-- you get the picture. She can do it all. She even served as interim director during the board's job search, and I don't think that she can ever be adequately thanked for taking on that job. I know I've never managed to say "thank you" enough, and I certainly take it for granted often enough that my computer is up and running. Cindy continues to put up with me and my every-ten-seconds questions about computers, books, you name it-- and she hasn't killed me (yet). Even when I've called her at home to pester her with computer questions, she has not show exasperation. I've learned a lot about the computer end of the library from her, and she deserves thanks for it. This very excellent and very strong librarian deserves recognition. Thanks to Meg for this nomination.
Lana from a public library in Gaffney, SC, is a Star because since taking over the director's job her, Lana has revitalized this library. Before she came, we staff members literally just worked from day to day. Now, our previously-ignored YA section has been completely revamped, and we have programs for teenagers. The area sports gaming-style chairs, new artwork, and a sealed-off, cozy atmosphere with a funky lamp and shag rug. This is only the tip of the iceberg, as such improvements go. However, the room is a far cry from the bare walls (except for an old, dreary oil painting) and crowded study tables it used to have. Lana applied for and was awarded a grant that allowed us to get a mobile wireless computer lab (as well as state of the art videoconferencing equipment); since then, we have been conducting internet classes, classes that are filled to the brim. We are the ONLY place in this small county to offer such classes, and she has therefore provided a wonderful service to this entire commmunity. We intend to offer a variety of computer classes (for ages ranging from teen to adult) as long as need be, even if it takes, as Lana said this very week, ten years! The wireless computer grant made the newspapers, as did the classes. A further recent appearance in the newspapers was yet another grant she applied for and received. This time, the grant involves delivering care packages to new mothers in the local hospital. This should show everyone how well Lana works with the outside community, as we needed the hospital's cooperation to get this done. The packets received contain a board book edition of "Goodnight, Moon," a picture frame magnet, a bib, and a bookmark; all of these promote our "Read to Me!" theme. Her work is not limited to the outside community, though, in a place this small, community work is invaluable in making citizens think of the library in a good light. Having come from a difficult situation previously, all of the employees were wary regarding a new director. However, she quickly instituted regular staff meetings, systems of feedback, organizational features like leave slips-- things other places probably take for granted. However, she had much to do just to bring us up to par.Now she strives to take this library higher. She changes people around in order to make their abilites fit their job. She is preparing various employees to teach future computer classes (she has taught the first ones) so that we will have a group of employees that can do these as long into the future as is necessary. She pushes hard for us to attend appropriate training functions. She is also very supportive of those of us who are considering getting an MLIS. In short, Lana walked into a situation where nothing had been changed, no grants applied for, the status quo left undisturbed, for many years. Employees were skittish at the idea of change. However, by showing that she was a kind person and a fair one, as well as a person who had high regard for order, she quickly gained the employee's trust. Employees felt that they could come to her to talk about their jobs and where they saw these jobs going, and she willingly offered assistance in helping plan working futures. She has gained numerous grants, the hospital grant and the wireless grant being the most recent to. Public relations are vital in a community this small, and she has done an excellent job making the library a shining Star. The ongoing computer classes promise to reach out and teach the large number of local people who have little or no access to a computer, and the fact that she is teaching staff to teach these classes underscores her determination to keep going as long as need be. Thanks to Meg for this nomination.
Nancy from an academic library in Hartsville, SC, is a Star because she has been an employee of Coker College and its library since 1984. She has been doing acquisitions for a long time. She keeps meticulous records and ALWAYS has the answer to our questions. She searches out the best deal she can find for the resources we acquire. Nancy works well with our faculty and they think highly of her. I often receive emails from faculty and staff praising her. She has recently taken on the extra responsibility of overseeing cataloging as we migrate to a new integrated library system and move to a new building. She has accepted all this change with grace and aplomb. I could not have a better person in charge of our Technical Services. Thanks to Alexa for this nomination.

Both were very well-attended with standing room only! Adam is a true Star because of his wonderful attitude, pride in his job, and his role in our community. Thanks to April for this nomination.

She prepared a listing of all arts and humanities-related videos and DVD's to provide to our dean so that all arts faculty would know at-a-glance what is available to them. She makes faculty aware of when budget would permit them to purchase materials in their area. She constantly studies to advance her knowledge, and presents solo enactments of women in literature not only to our own faculty here, but to those on our sister campuses and venues in the community. She visited England to enrich her teachings in Shakespeare first-hand for her courses, taught on top of her full-time library duties. She does all this with a winning personality and smile each time she serves students and faculty. From Denise.

In fact, it is so popular with the public, that during 2006, on two separate occassions, library patrons could not wait to get there and actually drove into the building! Yes, twice we had an entire car in this store front facility. Tremain took it all in stride. Made sure everyone was ok and immediately began the recovery effort. This meant replacing the carpet twice within a nine month period. Yes, tremain is truly a star! From Ricki.

all staff

Star because Our whole staff works so well together as a team that it often seems like we are one big body here to serve our patrons and each other! Many a time, an individual has gone above the call of duty in order to help a coworker or a member of the public (whether it be to coming in on a day off to cover for someone else or occupying someone's child with a story or song while the parent takes care of important business). All of igo staff works together towards the common goal of making "our" library the best that it possible can be. For that, all staff individually and as a whole deserve to be noted as a shining star! From cheryl.
San Antonio Public Library Wellness:
Almost years ago, as part of its wellness initiative, steps to a healthier san antonio, the city of san antonio launched the cosa walks the talk program to assist employees to adopt a healthy lifestyle by becoming more physically active and eating healthy.
Pedometers were distributed to participating employees, teams were formed and incentives were given after each goal was met. The goal was to have each employee walk 10,000 steps/day. (during the first 12 weeks, library teams walked 45,451,173 steps.) In addition, all city employees were able to receive discounts from area gyms, attend free lectures from local health organizations, receive free health screenings and discounted membership to weight watchers.
Since then, the program has grown with more health benefits available to employees, emphasizing preventive care, and the establishment of a wellness department within the city. The city manager has reinstituted an annual cosa 5k run/walk; encouraged staff to join in other sponsored events such as the komen race for the cure and the diabetes walk/run; has made available professional training for the runs at a discounted rate; introduced a free quit smoking program and a vending machine contract that allows employees the choice of selecting healthy snacks.
The san antonio public library staff has embraced these health initiatives due in large part to the enthusiastic participation and encouragement of library director ramiro salazar. Mr. Salazar was one of the first library members to sign-up for a pedomoter and lead his staff teams in the cosa walks the talk project. He work outs at a local gym, eats healthy, and, as time allows, still leads the library team in all city sponsored walks and runs. The san antonio public library staff's strong support of the wellness initiative has earned them a frontline representative to the city's wellness advisory council. From barbara.
