Course Schedule: May 6-7, 2008 (NY) and Fall 2008 (GA). This is a two-day workshop that will be presented in various sites around the country. The training program schedule for the two days will be:
- Day 1: 10 am – 12 pm; 1 pm – 5 pm
- Day 2: 8:30 am – 12 pm; 1 pm – 4:30 pm
In addition, all CPLA candidates will complete two projects.
Course Structure/Delivery:
This two-day program will provide working librarians with the skills and knowledge they need to understand their local political environment and to develop and implement effective action plans. The program is interactive and it includes a variety of group exercises based on a case study about a medium-sized county library with multiple branches. Using the same case study throughout the training will give participants an opportunity to apply what they are learning in a practical way in the “real” library – and to see the effects of the decisions they make throughout the two-day program.
At the end of the training program, participants will be able describe their community demographics and culture, assess local political issues, explain how local decisions are made, and know how federal, state and local statutes, ordinances and resolutions affect local decision-making. They will develop the skills they need to build coalitions and work collaboratively, develop negotiation and conflict resolution skills, and understand how their values and ethics influence their political effectiveness. They will know how to identify key players and develop support groups and be prepared to deal effectively with the local media.

Why become an ALA-APA CPLA Provider?
It is an opportunity to participate in a national certification program in a library specialty.
If you are already offering a course the meets the standard, approval provides you with an additional audience for your courses.
If you are already offering a course that meets the standard, you may receive approval for two previous years of offering the course, meaning your students will qualify for completion of one standard even before they apply to become a CPLA candidate.
