Course Fee: $300

Course Structure/Delivery: The course will be conducted via the same technology used by the Graduate School of Library and Information Science online education program (LEEP). The course will consist of 6 live synchronous sessions of 2 hours each for a total of 12 direct contact hours. Students will also be expected to participate asynchronously during the 6 weeks via discussion boards, which will add another 2-3 contact hours to the course.

Purpose of the course: To create an awareness of and sensitivity to diverse information needs of multiethnic/multicultural/multilingual populations served by libraries. It focuses on developing skills for planning, implementing and evaluating programs for addressing the information needs of diverse communities through information needs assessment and analysis; program planning, public service, outreach and collection development. It explores multicultural resources and services using a framework that focuses on: People (who work in libraries and their understanding of the concepts of diversity and multicultural librarianship); Collections (building collections to serve an increasingly diverse multicultural, multiethnic and multilingual society); and Services (to diverse groups and populations in libraries and organizational culture from a managerial perspective).

Technology Requirements:

Participants will need a reliable Internet connection via modem, ISDN, DSL, cable or other dedicated connectivity. A 28.8 or higher speed modem and SLIP, PPP, or other TCP/IP connectivity is required. Software requirements include a Java enabled Web Browser, Real Player software, and Adobe Reader. Hardware requirements are: an IBM compatible Pentium II or greater (at least 400mhz) with Windows 98/ME/2000/XP - or - Macintosh with OS 8 (or a more recent MacOS); 128MB RAM memory; a sound card with speakers and/or earphones; and a color monitor with at least 800x600 resolution.

If you are already offering a course the meets the standard, approval provides you with an additional audience for your courses.

If you are already offering a course that meets the standard, you may receive approval for two previous years of offering the course, meaning your students will qualify for completion of one standard even before they apply to become a CPLA candidate.
