Demonstrating Competency
There are two ways to demonstrate your knowledge and skills in the competency sets: approved courses and portfolios. You may achieve the competency sets by successfully completing six approved courses, submitting portfolios for six competency sets, or a combination with some approved courses and some portfolios.
Approved Courses
Each LSSC-approved course covers all competencies in a given competency set. For each approved set, there will be approved courses. An LSSC candidate who successfully completes an approved course will receive proof of completion to post in their Candidate Achievement Record. Approved courses are listed on the LSSC website and updates as new courses are approved, so you may wish to check the website frequently. All approved courses will cover all of the competencies in a competency set.
Approved courses may be in-person, online, or a combination of both. Approved courses will be offered by library schools, community colleges, state library associations, state libraries, regional library cooperatives, multi-state cooperatives, ALA Divisions and other units, independent library consultants – any library or educational organization that offers continuing education or staff development opportunities to libraries.
Portfolios
A second method to demonstrate your competency is through portfolios. Candidates who have gained knowledge and skills in competency sets through work experience or continuing education may want to submit a portfolio that demonstrates their knowledge and skills. The portfolio should cover all of the competencies in a competency set. The portfolio will be created online as part of the Candidate Achievement Record. When the portfolio in a competency set is completed, you will submit it for assessment by experts in the competency set. More information is available under developing and submitting a portfolio.
