Promises, Promises: How Selected Labor Issues Are Likely To Fare under an Obama Administration and Democratic Congress

By Christine Martin

January 20, the Inauguration Day of President-Elect Barack Obama, will mark the first time since 1994 that Democrats have controlled the White House and both houses of Congress. Historically the Democratic Party has supported labor on any number of issues, but budgets are tight and Obama may want to work with business groups as well as labor unions. In fact, because Democrats did not acquire the 60 Senate seats needed to bring a question to a vote in that body, Democrats still will have to work with Republicans and others who support employer interests, business and employer groups on a number of labor issues. American Libraries: November 21, 2008

FMLA Regulations Issued; Effective January 16, 2009

By Kelly A. Hayden, JD, Assistant General Counsel

Reprinted with permission from the Management Association of Illinois’s Web site, www.hrsource.org. The article was posted on November 20, 2008.

Employers have waited a long time. After receiving notification from the Department of Labor in February of 2008 that the Family and Medical Leave Act (FMLA) regulations would be revised, the Department issued regulations on November 17, 2008. Following a 60-day publication period, the regulations are due to take effect on January 16, 2009. The regulations are helpful, in that they provide further guidance with respect to the new family military leave amendments to the FMLA, enacted in January of 2008. On the other hand, they constitute the first major revisions to the FMLA since it was enacted in 1993. Therefore, they will significantly impact the way employers handle employee leaves. MORE
