Micromanaging or Delegating: What You Believe Is All Important

By Cynthia Kisby

Library Worklife will be featuring articles throughout the year about various aspects of micromanaging.  It proved to be a popular topic.

Once an employee has mastered a set of job duties, developed technical proficiency and demonstrated understanding of organizational policies and procedures, the next logical step on the career ladder is promotion to a supervisory position. Unfortunately, the abilities and characteristics that make an outstanding employee may not be the same ones that make an outstanding manager. Sometimes great, task-oriented employees have a hard time shifting gears to develop the people-centered skills that are associated with good supervisors. MORE

Librarianship in Southeast Asia

By Raphael Jackson

Though education and teaching is widely respected outside of the United States, it comes to the surprise of many international students and professionals alike that “you need a degree to shelve books.” In North America the image of librarianship is undergoing metamorphosis from the archaic portrayals of book custodians. Around the world this stereotype is also changing, albeit a bit slower. Through recent professional opportunities in Southeast Asia, I’ve had the chance to discuss librarianship with library employees in Indonesia and Malaysia. Cultural and economic differences between these two countries have shaped the way their respective administrators and librarians are adapting the information science profession to the needs of the twenty-first century. A New Set of Job Interview No-no’s

By Sian Brannon

Having recently conducted an onslaught of interviews to fill open positions at my library, I am constantly surprised at the things people say and do while trying for a new job. There are so many books, newspapers articles and helpful blogs are out there for library job-seekers to use, I thought the interview process would be a bit boring because most people would be neatly groomed, well-prepared and polite. Boy, was I wrong. MORE

They usually fall around evaluation time, but I have known them to be whenever monies become available for the year. At those times, you can plead your case for how important your work has been, what the results of your work have been, why they couldn’t do without you and what you will do for them in the future.
