Library Worklife Frequently Asked Questions

The American Library Association-Allied Professional Association (ALA-Allied Professional Association or ALA-APA) is a nonprofit professional organization established to promote the mutual professional interests of librarians and other library workers. The ALA-APA is a companion organization to the American Library Association (ALA). The ALA-APA is focused on two broad areas:

Certification of individuals in specializations beyond the initial professional degree

Direct support of comparable worth and pay equity initiatives, and other activities designed to improve the salaries and status of librarians and other library workers.

Library Worklife: HR E-News for Today’s Leaders is a publication of the ALA-Allied Professional Association.

Library Worklife replaces Library Personnel News (LPN), which ceased publication in December 2003

Topics covered include pay equity, HR issues, career advancement, certification, and the work/life balance for all library workers

It is issued the second Tuesday of each month via email.

It is available on the ALA-APA Web site at www.ala-apa.org

All ALA members who have indicated that ALA may send information to them via email and organizational members who have a contact email on file with ALA Customer Service will receive Library Worklife until June 2004, issue 6.

Subscriptions will begin to be taken in April or May and information will be available on the ALA-APA Web site and advertisements in other library-related publications.

Subscriptions will be $35 for individual ALA members and $60 for individual non-ALA members. Organizational members will continue to receive Library Worklife as a benefit of membership, if an organizational contact email has been given to ALA Customer Service at (membership@ala.org, or 1-800-545-2433, ext. 5)

National Library Workers Day Is Coming Soon!
The ALA-APA Web site is full of ideas to use for your library’s celebration of National Library Workers Day (NLWD) on April 20th, 2004. There are ideas for how you can show your appreciation for library staff. Get your local media involved by using the sample letters to the editor, radio announcements, and editorials and sending them out. Get your local government to recognize the day by using the sample proclamation. NLWD is being held on the Tuesday of National Library Week, April 18–24th.
