Agency for Healthcare Research and Quality Awards More Than $22.3 Million in Health Information Technology Grants to States, Particular Emphasis on Rural and Underserved Areas

You may be living in an area that is benefiting from Health Information Technology Grants, another step towards Americans having standardized, electronic, and secure access to health care records. The Agency for Healthcare Research and Quality (AHRQ) chose sixteen grantees. U.S. Department of Health and Human Services Secretary Mike Leavitt said, “Sharing successful best practices will be valuable to providers nationwide seeking to implement health IT systems that will improve patient safety and reduce hassle. These grants help move our health care system closer to making the medical clipboard a thing of the past.” These systems are often collaborations between many types of healthcare providers, such as medical records departments, information technology departments, pharmacies, clinical staff and rural providers. www.ahrq.gov/news/press/pr2005/hitimppr.htm#hitgrants
