Best Careers 2007

Original article by Marty Nemko, U.S. News and World Report, December 18, 2006

A December 18 article in U.S. News and World Report identifies librarianship as one of the 25 most desirable careers of 2007. The article cites “reasonable” work hours, varied and challenging work responsibilities, and contact with the community as particularly attractive aspects of librarianship.

Other desirable careers include the clergy, optometry, and urban/regional planning. The survey’s results reflect pay, status and quality of life allowed by each profession. The survey also considers such socio-cultural trends as the aging baby boomer population, the ubiquity of the Internet and a higher premium on personal satisfaction in the workplace. For each of the 25 careers the article provides a job description, median salary information and an opinion from an expert in the field.

University of Hawaii Library Lacks Funding for Books

The University of Hawaii at Manoa has instituted a hiring freeze of library staff and faculty. The library cannot fill open positions due to drastic budget cuts made necessary by the rising cost of print and electronic publications.

The acquisitions department also suffered cuts; the library will add no more than 6,000 books to its collections until mid-summer.

Science department librarian Sara Rutter worries that the decrease in ordered books may cause UHM’s national standard to slump even further below the median rankings: according to the Association of Research Libraries, the UHM library ranked 79 out of 113 university libraries across the nation last year. When ranking libraries, the ARL considers collection holdings, staff size and book budget expenditures. The hiring freeze might also negatively impact the library’s standing.
