National Library Workers Day
How Will Your Library Celebrate?
The Cabell County Public Library is proud of its workers. The Huntington, WV, library and its seven branches will decorate with National Library Workers Day-themed balloons, banners, posters and bookmarks. The libraries will treat each staff member to a $10 restaurant gift certificate, and they will provide punch and cookies for both staff and the public. The local newspaper will publish an article about the Cabell County Public Library and its services. And each library worker will wear a pin to remind the public that “Libraries Work Because We Do!” LW thanks Sara Ramezani, Reference and Extension Librarian, for writing us about her library’s plans!
Showcasing new bookmobiles are the highlight of Akron-Summit County Public Library’s NLWD celebration. Jon Hershey, Mobil Services Manager, shared a photo of “our baby.” He says, “This vehicle replaces a 1986 vehicle so it is a big morale booster for our staff and should be more comfortable for us and our customers.”
Also celebrating National Library Workers Day is the Newport News Public Library in Newport News, VA. Assistant Director Elizabeth K. Spiegle says that her library will post NLWD fliers (available free at http://ala-apa.org/about/nlwd_poster.pdf), and on April 17 the library will hold a drawing for a hotel package! The Newport News Public Library also is encouraging staff and patrons to nominate their favorite library workers as a Library Star. In fact, eleven Stars currently posted on the ALA-APA NLWD website are from Newport News, including five staff members and the entire library!
The Grand Prairie Public Library System in Grand Prairie, TX, will celebrate both its workers and its heritage; the library will host a tortilla soup and flan party. “I’ve had requests from several staff members for this particular party,” says Senior Librarian Katy Herrick. “I knew that [NLWD] would be the perfect opportunity! Thanks for the opportunity to celebrate.”
The Virginia Beach Public Library is working to improve the status of its library workers. On National Library Workers Day, VBPL employees will bring digital cameras to work and document a normal work day. The library’s Marketing Team will use the photographs to publicize the contributions of the library workers to their community. “Proof that we don’t sit around and read books all day!” says employee Carolyn Caywood. “Who has time?”
